Gulf view I beleive shipps fully cured rock. Very high shipping cost as it is shipped in water. Pretty good rock, but high cost.

Like I said though, I beleive they ship it in water which is better but more shipping cost. It ends up like $7.00 a lbs.

When it comes in take pics of your rock guys so we can see what's on it.

I've read lots of threads about gulf-view having a ton of life and of course the occasional mantis. But i've seen nothing but great remarks about the product.

If it's around the $4 range I would take a few pieces. I checked out the website awhile back after reading a post on Reef Central. He has very nice rock with all kinds of stuff on it. I just rearranged my tank after adding my overflow and would like to fill a few spaces. Nothing large or anything like that, but maybe 10lbs.

I'd just have to figure out who else won't be getting a Christmas present this year!

We can stamp their name on the Live Rock!
We'll call it a Pet Live Rock... lol

That's a great idea! Maybe if I offer to put peoples names on the rock for a donation I could get it all paid for! Kinda like when they sell bricks with your name on them for sidewalks for charity! I need to work on the details for when I can afford to build my big tank! :-D :-o

IF you wanted to see Tamba Bay & Gulfview LR, check out a classroom at the middle school close to Parkway. Louis Caranza's wife taught there, and they setup a 46 gallon bowfront w/ aquacultured rocks.

What is the price on the rock? I'll take about 300 lbs at the right price. If not I need to order tomorrow anyway. If it is $2 or less If not forget it. I don't think it is any better than Fiji just more $$$.

A post from Reef Central on the Kaelini rock. I have to agree. Not that great. It is all hyped up like different rock always is. Get the premium Fiji and save your money.

Thread: Kaelini live rock
skeeters Does anyone know anything about this rock?

It appears to be very pretty rock. My LFS is selling it for $10.99 lb (OUCH!!!). His Fiji is $ 5.99 lb.

He says that is not as dense as Fiji live rock, that is why it is more expensive. He said that it weighs half the weight as Fiji.

Any comments on Kaelini live rock....
mjsandbe Sorry, never heard of it.
scubadude I will be selling it for $3.89 lb for only the month of July, as an opening special for my store :) But there is a catch! You have to buy minimum 90lbs of this stuff...thats how its boxed....not like you can get fiji in 45lb boxes

Here is a thread to see a bunch of pics of the Kaelini Rock i just got.

Kaelini LR pics (http://www.reefcentral.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=92367)
dgasmd I was setting up my 125 gal reef about 2 months back and really researched about the different kinds of rock. I was told the same things as you in addition to been nicer and prettier. I bought 100 lb of fiji, 50 lb of kaelini, 25 lb marshall, and 25 lb of tonga bubble. The rock was exactly as promised by the vendor, so I don't feel I got taken at all.
The Kaelini rock is much more expensive than the fiji and others. It has more shapes and so on. The truth, at least in my mind, is that after getting it all in my tank I realized who cares what the rock's shapes are. My goal is to cover them up with corals and such and after you do that nobody cares about the shapes, colors, etc. I feel it was a waste of moeny.
If I was to do it all over again, I would get 150-175 lb of fiji and maybe 25-50 lb of Fl rock just for diversity.
This is just my opinion.

On Wednesday my classes have been cancelled so I can come as soon as you have it. I would prefer to get mine out of the box directly, since I can meet you at home soon. That will make it a little easier for me. At 40 lbs I have almost a box, so we can just take out a chunk and I can take the box, right? I do not have any buckets that I could subject live rock to except the one that is currently mixing salt water! Let me know what time you are looking at getting homw with it and I will meet you there!

Thanks.

I hope you guys don't get delayed by the Thansgiving traveler(one of the heaviest travel season of year.)

TexasState

There's several rate of shipping. Depending on the airline & rate you choose. If you choose the cheaper regular freight, your rock could continually get bumped to the next flight.

For example w/ Southwest, Guaranteed next flight is about $75 per 100 pounds. With this service, you have to have the flight book and pay upfront. I haven't found too many online retailer willing to use Next Flight Guarantee b/c of the hassle of booking and paying upfront on their part.

Priority is about $60 per 100 pounds. You can still get delayed shipment with Priority.

Then regular freight is about $40 per 100 pounds. I would only gamble with the cheaper regular freight rate earlier in the week, and during slow season. If you use regular freight, you have to trust the seller to know how to book the shipment for you.

I am pretty sure that your mantis has a friend that was in my rock. He has different coloration, but is WOW. He hitched a ride into my 29 gallon with no corals or anything. When he shows up again I will get a better look at him. If he is for sure a mantis he's yours if you want him. With so little stuff in there he should be easy to get.

I am already amazed at the life on the rock. 30 minutes in the tank and I have a great Christmas tree guy (really thick, tube worm looking thing that has a ton of feelers) that is alive and sticking out and going back into hiding with my movements. There is also a lot of little tube worms that are opening. A few crabs, what appears to be barnacles "licking" the water... lots of stuff.

There are also 3 large things that appear to be slug or apples or cucumbers that are "holding on" to the rock but have a crusty outside. Like a slimy thing that was taken out of the water and secreted something to hold in the remaining moisture. I figured that it was some dead something that would foul the water pretty good, but they are noy letting go of the rock. Wierd stuff.

I feel like its Christmas with all this excitement!

I will look for him tonight and seperate him when I find him. He is hiding in some of the big holes in the rock right now so I cannot find him. That will be my mission after the munchkin goes to bed. I will put him in the floating container I use to use to make my 2 bettas psycho! I will let y'all know when I find him and we can arrange to get him to whoever.

That big red crusty thing that is kinda like a crusty slug is moving a little.

I found my guy last night and put him in the floating betta container. He is not there this morning. The neon and cleaner and the shrimp from the rock (I did not see him really well) are still all alive, so the mantis must not be hungry yet.

I am trying to figure that out. I don't have a book with shrimp names. It is a gorgeous little guy. I will find him and describe him.... one minute.

OK. I just stirred up the Southdown sand so badly I won't be able to find him for a few days. He did NOT have the long antenna that the cleaners and stuff do. He looks very like the big clawed guys that the gobies pair with, the burrowers. BUT he is a pretty greenish blue color. Very pretty. I will keep looking for a name since my description is the pits!

Josh,
Did you ever find that mantis that escaped you? I have not found mine and I have seen no bad things happen yet. Wonder if he is dead? A few little anemone type things have popped up! Neat!

Chris
Thu, 5th Dec 2002, 08:33 AM
I doubt he's dead Misti... i've heard stories of people have huge ammonia spikes from their cycle only to find the mantis was one of the only survivors. They're like the cockroach, able to survive in harsh conditions, and almost impossible to get rid of...

You might have to remove the rock and let it sit out a while to get rid of him. If yours is anywhere close to the size of the one Josh found you shouldn't worry at all for now though, the most he'll end up killing is a snail more than likely.

The only rock he would be hiding in is the pretty tonga I have in there! No way I take that out of the water! Out of 300 or so lbs of rock between my two tanks that is the only "pretty" piece! I like it too much to kill off the stuff! Maybe I just need to dedicate that tank as a 30 gal mantis tank!

Yup! That's what mine look like. I guess I'll be soaking them!

You don't want to soak your rock. You can get needle from Eckerd or Walgreen(just tell that you're not a drug addict and you're using this to inject the plant in your aquarium. Use the needle to inject strong Kalkwasser solution into the aitaipsia. Make sure you get them good, or they'll come back for revenge.

Tim Marvin

:rotf: You had to ask Dr. Ron if those were aptasia? To kill off those mantis shrimp you will probably need about 1.040 or more salt. When they jump out don't grab it smash the f--king thing with a big rock. They are very resiliant, and VERY good predators! They can eat anything in your tank. Someone called them a cockroach, that is probably putting it mildly. Very tough, very smart, and very destructive. BAD idea to put one in a reef intentionally! I can't believe they actually sell them. The only tank I would put them in would be an octopus tank and I am not even sure they could get the mantis.

Tim Marvin
Thu, 5th Dec 2002, 09:59 PM
Get a good copperbanded butterfly and it will take care of the aptasia. Be careful though if you have any other anemone it will eat those also. They leave corals and everything else alone.

Tim Marvin
Thu, 5th Dec 2002, 10:30 PM
I have tried 1.030 and it didn't work for me. I have one in the main reef right now. It gets a good diet of snails though and hasn't gone after much else yet. Oh except for peppermint shrimp, and royal gramma, and hermits, but nothing else. Well except for........ Oh well.

Tim Marvin

It is about 2 inches. Really colorful, but don't be deceived by how neat they look. I understand they can get about 4-5 inches in a tank.
