Hello everyone. I am going to add a sump to my 58gallon and wanted to see what your experiences have been with the different pumps. I'm thinking of using a 20gallon high tank for the sump so that really won't leave much room for an external pump, but I may try to fit one in as there are more choices with them than submersibles. Please let me know how your pumps have performed/any problems/noise levels/etc. Thanks!

Make the sump a refugium and use a mag-7 or 5. They make a little hum but can be used internal or external. They are 3 prong and ground protected.

They'll wait until you get the tank just the way you like it then they'll melt down and wipe you out..... :o :o :o :o :o :o :-o :-o :-o :-o

What Iwaki are you looking for?

I don't have one, but they usually run a couple hundred for one that size. MAK-4/Gen-x is a comparable pump so are the bluelines. These pumps are around $150 range. Also Mag-drives push a lot of water. A mag 9 is in that range and cost around $80.

I love my Iwaki. It's quiet and dependable. A great investment, but they are kinda big.

Iwaki is a great pump, just a little more pricey.

If you drill that glass (I assume your 20 high sump will be glass) I would use an Iawaki...if you use a submersible...I would go with a mag....I have used Iawakis for years now and am very sataisfied

If you are drilling the sump I would definately use an external pump like Iwaki VS internal/external like a mag.! It will free up room in the sump.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm actaully going to try to cram a 29gallon tank in my stand for the sump. May have to find/build a taller stand since this one is kind of short. Since there won't be any extra room, I am gonna use a Mag 12 for the return. I ordered a double overflow box from Lifereef so I should be able to create some good circulation for my 58gallon tank. I pland to split the return with one pipe going to each end of the tank. I will then Y off with locline so I can divert the return water in 4 directions.

Chris,

Do you have a fine oolithic sand bed? The Mag 12 dual/oveflow is going to stir the heck out of your sand bed in a 58. A mag 950(on a restricted ball valve) kick the heck out of my 72 bowfront.

If you're ordering from Lifereef. Specify to make your overflow a slimline model, and make the syphon(front box) to be black or blue.

I have the slimline model, and it take up less room then the full version.

Just wanted to let everyone know that today I finally got my sump installed and running! I had been planning it for awhile and still had problems with it for a few hours. Unfortunately my stand is not as tall as I would like it and that caused problems. But as they say, I came, I saw, and I conquered! My tank looks so much better with all the powerheads, heater, skimmer, and stuff out of sight! I love it. :-D

Now to pay off the credit card!
