For some that were following this (http://www.maast.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43914) thread, I decided to finally get a tank up and running again. Well after a lot of http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a142/LoneStarSA/Elos%20Mini/read.gif over the past month, I have decided to go with a different system http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a142/LoneStarSA/Elos%20Mini/xyxthumbs.gif

A Elos Mini system!
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a142/LoneStarSA/Elos%20Mini/dance.gif

Elos has finally came out with all-in-one nano cube setup. For those who have not seen or heard of Elos, you can see their beautiful tanks here:

www.elosusa.com

Interzoo08 debuted the Mini system. Here are a few photos from their booth setup:

The Mini E comes with everything shown.

* A Crystal clear front panel (91% clarity), 17"x17"x16" 20g cube tank.
* Maple stand
* Elos sump 100
* Elso NS100 protein skimmer
* e-Lite LED light fixture

From there the rest of the equipment will be:

* Profilux Plus II controller
* ProfiLuxSimu Spot LED (red-blue-storm)
* Profilux Dosing pump station
* Profilux Propeller Breeze fans (depending on if I need them for cooling or not)
* Tunze 6055 NanoStream pump (controllable through Profilux)

So this past weekend I placed my order for the Profilux Plus II starter package through www.cherrycorals.com I also purchased a ProfiLuxSimu Spot LED (red-blue-storm) as well. Todd from Cherry Corals was very helpfull in completing my purchase. They are actually located 5 minutes from work here in Michigan! Plus they are the top USA dealer for this amazing controller!

Cool thunderstorm function. Not sure I would want it on 4x/day everyday. What does the intensity function control? The number of strikes per minute?

The plan is to order the tank combo next month. Elos just started importing these tanks at the end of June. I'm not sure how large the shipment was but there are a few dealers across the US that will be selling this system. www.phishybusiness.com (http://www.phishybusiness.com) is where I'm going to place my order once I'm ready. I'm hoping I can get it in before a big MACNA surge in their popularity!

Sean, I'm not sure if there is a Texas dealer as of yet. I am sure any dealer that sells test kits and other Elos products can have the opportunity to start selling these tanks (along with other Elos tanks). If anyone is interested, they can contact Jesse at info@elosusa.com

Stoneroller, your right, the intensity can control how bright the strikes are and how many are for each storm. You can ramp up or down the intensity depending on what you like. You can also determine how long you want the storm to last. Although my main light will not be dimmable (boo!) I can figure out when each storm will happen. From there I can program the main light to turn off when the storm starts and the back on when the storm ends.

As for those gasping about the price, yes its very pricey. BUT I have weighed my options over and over. On the endtable build, I was close to the same price for just the light (ATI Powermodule), skimmer (Deltec MCE600), and a custom built acrylic rimless tank. Going with this system gives me a very sleek, well thought out all-in-one setup. I would have ordered the tank first but the controller was on sale this month! So I couldn't pass it up....

I will be posting a lot of photos and videos as I progress with this build. :)

Ruben, I'm using the e-Lite that comes with the tank for the main light spectrum. The LED Spot from Profilux will simulate sunrise, sunset, moon cycle, and thunderstorms. The controller can dim any ballast or Profilux supplied LED system. You can have a total of 8 dimmable ballasts/lights on one system! The dimmable ballasts will need a 1-10v input though. There are some t-5 ballasts out on the market that have the capability. So far I have not heard about a metal halide ballast that can be dimmed (other than being manually dimmed).

Here are some cool videos of the dimming capabilities of the Profilux I found on YouTube:

ah my bad, i was thinking of the ACLS that dims metal halide. looks like ill have to read more into it. so youre saying it can dim LED and some T5 ballasts that have the capability? sounds like i have something on my wishlist to add, lol

LoneStar
Thu, 10th Jul 2008, 04:39 PM
Ahh thats right, the ACLS. Forgot about those. But aren't those stand alone light/ballast controllers? That you add your own fixture to? Or aren't they all-in-one package. Either way, I think those are really really expensive :)

You can see the the Profilux packages and components here:
http://www.cherrycorals.com/home.php?cat=11

It will show the t5 ballast that is dimmable. There are a few more companies (non reef related) that do sell t5 ballasts. I did research last summer when I was planning on using this controller on my 156g but I'm not sure where that data went. You can always post on the GHL/Profilux Vendor Forum on ReefCentral. Check it out Ruben, if your looking for a controller. Besides the light options, this thing can do a whole lot more!

Also, be aware that they may do special pricing at MACNA if you plan on going :D

I believe they have done it in the past, as well as aquarium obsessed did in Houston (they were knocking like $600 off of their tank packages)

I wish I was going to the Atlanta MACNA! I did not make plans since earlier this year I was sans tank. Now with work being as hectic as it is, I probably wouldn't make it out there anyway! I think I am gonna drive out to New Jersey for next years MACNA.

For some reason my original impression of the aquarium system made me think of Macs vs Microsoft.

LOL I'm a MAC fan and user! Although, I am having to run the Profilux software on my old pc laptop. Once I either get the ethernet or wireless expansion card for the controller, I will be able to run the software though my MAC ;)

very nice tank not sure about the price for a 20 gal. What light do you plan to use?

jc
Fri, 11th Jul 2008, 06:50 PM
All it needs it a sound machine to activate with the lightning. It would take the stress relieving aspects of aquariums to a whole new level. Oh and how about a rooster crowing with the sunrise lights :)

What light do you plan to use?

I am initially going to use the e Light that is pictured in the photos from the first page. It is a LED fixture that comes with the tank package. I am going to try that out at first and see how I like it and then decide if I want to keep it or go a different route (just depends on the results I get I suppose).

LOL yeah. Some sort of audio thunder! You could program a recording to play using the power strip if you wanted to haha And speaking of stress.....there is a option on the controller to change certain levels for fish that may be stressed out....but I still gotta read up on that and play with the functions to fully understand it!

I was very lucky to check out Cherry Corals in person! It is not a traditional brick and mortar shop! When I visited Todd, he had just got a huge shipment of acans in. ALOT of nice ones! Very nice stuff!

I'm gonna hit him up for sure on some nice LPS once the tank is established. Todd is a very nice guy and well worth checking his site out and doing business with. :bigsmile:

And Sean, if you haven't bought a controller and already know what you want one to do, read up on the Profilux. It would be a perfect fit :wink_smile:

Serdar over at PhishyBusiness was able to place my order for the Mini, ensuring I am getting one in September. Otherwise, the next shipment would not get in till Santa is chanting ho-ho-ho

Well I figured I would bring this thread back to life. For my 4,000th post http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a142/LoneStarSA/Elos%20Mini/dance.gif, I figure I would post some data on the Elos e-lite. The following data came from Jesse over at Elos USA.

e-lite information. In order to get a full and honest view on the e-lite I feel it is needed to show both the par readings, from a useful distance and the spectrum to get the output and quality of the light.
PAR measurements done with:
LI-COR LI-250A in combination with the QUANTUM sensor.

Output:
The Max is 116,83 µmol s-1 m-2, measured roughly in the center of the emission.
Distance Output measured and grid description:
The grid is based on a 40x40 cm rectangle (more or less the base of the System MINI), each square is 5x5 cm, the distance is 42 cm which is the distance between the bottom of the e-lite glass to the bottom of our System MINI. For those who want a really high, though not very useful PAR reading, we got a PAR reading of 1590 reading at 75mm (2.95 inches) from the glass of the e-lite, just for a laugh

Ok the photos of the tank itself did not turn out so well. My camera isn't the best and the water is a lil' dirty after filling the tank but you get the idea for now! The powerhead is a el cheapo one just for mixing salt. Looks like I'll use it till I get the Eheims from Jesse over at Elos USA. The main flow will come from a Tunze 6055....although I am still kicking the idea around for getting a MP20.

Wow, even the boxes the tank and stand come in look nice!!! I'm not saying to not get the MP40w, but I've been using an MP20 (soley except for ~300gph return pump) in my 40 breeder. All of my SPS are getting plenty of water moving over them. I was hesitant at first thinking the MP20 wasn't strong enough (had about 3500gph in the display before the MP20), but after a month of use I'm convinced that it's absolutely enough.

Well I made a little more progress in the past few days. My Eheim pumps that should of come with my tank will not be here until Tuesday. So for now the skimmer and return line is not operational. I did finally make up my mind on either the Vortech or Tunze. I opted for the Tunze 6055 :). It works flawlessly with the Profilux II controller. I also ordered and installed the Tunze Osmolator. It is the best top off system on the market. I also got a Eboy Jager heater. For now the heater is just placed in the display until the sump is operational.

A few days ago I ran by Ikea on the way home from work and picked up a small cabinet to hold the controller and misc wires and stuff. Here are some photos of how it turned out, along with tiding up all the wires.

I went with the Tunze Osmolator because I have owned one in the past and know how well they work. I'm going to get the dosing station later this year though. Yes I could have picked white, black, or maple. You can also custom order a color if you want. It will be a longer lead time if you do though.

I'll have to take a tape measurer home from work and see how much clearance there is from the top of the sump to the top of the stand.

And for a update, I got the compact Eheim pumps in yesterday. The return line and skimmer are hooked up now. I'm starting to get some algea growth which is a nice site to see. Been over two years since I had to clean algea off the glass :bigsmile:

There is a integrated section of the sump that holds fresh ro/di water. Check out the photos on the previous pages where the Osmolator is pictured. Where the metering pump is sitting is the top off holder. Pretty cool integration :)

Thank you all for the kind words.

Another cool inovation from Elos is their return nozzle. They use a quick release elbow on their return spout to help break the siphon on the return line when the power goes out. You can also rig it as a acclimator as well! Hook some tubing to it and run it down to your acclimation container. Then just use a clamp to adjust the flow really slow. I'm trying it our right now on my 'mini' clean up crew. A few scarlet leg hermits, an electric blue leg hermit, and some astrea and nassarius snails.

23" from the bottom of the sump to the top of the stand

Ok I am about to retract my comments about the Tunze Osmolator. This new one is just a piece of junk. I have owned one of these in the past and ran it trouble free for many years. Now I have spent all weekend trying to get the optical sensor to settle in. This new one will turn on and off constantly to the point the optical sensor gets buried under water and trips the float sensor (safety off sensor). It is placed in a dark, turbulant free zone (no bubbles) in the sump but will still not work. Looks like its going to get pulled out and trashed!! :angry:

Have you checked the sensor to make sure it isn't cracked or stained? The only time I ever had a problem is when the sensor was calcified.

topsoil
Sun, 19th Oct 2008, 11:22 PM
I recall having that problem with my sensor also. I soaked it in vinegar for a day, and that solved it for me. I'm sure tunze would replace the unit if that doesn't work.

LoneStar
Mon, 20th Oct 2008, 08:41 AM
I will try cleaning it with vinegar this week but since this new and straight out of the box, there shouldn't be too much stuff on the sensor blocking it. Right now its off line since I do not want to risk it running by itself while I'm at work this week. I always like to be home for an afternoon to watch it run before I feel comfortable enough to leave!

Just an update....

I took Roger's advice and cleaned the optical sensor with soapy water to remove any residuals from production. So far it seems to be working. I have only filled the top off reservoir with a days worth of evap water just in case.

Right now the tank is cycling great. Got some algea to deal with but that will settle down in a few weeks. Already got coraline growing on the glass :)

The Elos E-Lite is so powerfull....yet so simple. The thing is mainly a small powersupply and a handfull of powerfull LED's at the right light spectrum. Coraline algea is spreading further everday :) My only setback is the big, purple sps coral I had in the center of the tank has faded quite a bit. Its not a very deep purple anymore.....not sure if its due to the lighting or not. None of the other SPS have fadded. Acutally everything else is encrusting & growing like champs. The Profilux controller is FAR from being limited on expansion. You can easily upgrade ports for accessories to the controller. It's as easy as adding an expansion board to a motherboard. When the Profilux III comes out, people can actually upgrade their II's to a III by just buying components to upgrade it. You can run mulitple tanks/systems with the controller. You can also add multiple power bars to the controller, to allow multi programmable outlets.

If anyone is curious about the controller, just go to their sponsored forum on RC.

You can also ask questions in the Cherry Corals forum here on MAAST, since Todd at CC is the main importer/distributor of the system in the US.

This thing is awesome! If you don't mind me asking, what has all of the equipment cost you?

Well I think its run around $3100 for all the equipment. Nowhere near that in livestock, as the tank has been on autopilot for months now (without buying any livestock). I think I am going to move the direction of the tank to being a zoa only tank. That is once I stop buying tools on ebay :wink_smile:

The main system comes with everything you need from Elos (well almost everything :shades:) $1599.99:

I was comparing the RKE and GHL on some website, and the RKE had more options, but the GHL had some pretty cool stuff in it. I saw that you could add slots, but how many slots could you really add to the Profilux? With the RKE you can put 63 modules, so you could have a crazy combination of things.

Im going to go ahead and ask because though!

so you bought all that for a zoa collection?

i think it is this impracticality that causes reefers to lose interest.

Thanks for the links to the equipment! My grandfather is wanting one, and he might want something like that for his new office.

No I bought it all cause I saved up for something I wanted. As interests come and go (especially in this hobby), this system allows me to change it up and pack it up and go where ever I may land. Zoa's are just the current flavor for now :thumbs_up:

Yup. I love the equipment aspect of this hobby. I think the simpler equipment make things the more people would want to stay in the hobby
